John Swiglo (issue 59)

(By Craig Murphy) Defending Modified division champion Jon Swiglo hopes he gets to enjoy the renovated Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma. “We’re kinda fouled up this year,” Swiglo said in mid-April from his home in Pe Ell. “Everything kinda hit us at once. Normally at this time we have the car 100 percent ready to go. We don’t even have the motor in right now. We’ve been kinda busy. We’re taking it a little lighter this year. It would be nice (to run the full schedule) but doggone it’s tough.”

Rick Welter (issue 59)

Two years ago, the inspiration for the Quasar Blue with silver flames paint scheme on Rick Welter’s ’67 Belvedere came from a shirt that son Justin was wearing. Welter piloted the “blue car” to the 2003 Pro Bracket title at Bremerton Raceway. Race fans may recall the Port Ludlow racer behind the wheel of another ’67 Belvedere, Savage, as the track’s 2000 Pro bracket champ.

Russ Rockwell (issue 59)

Tumwater motorcycle racer Russ Rockwell goes by the fitting moniker: Rock. With early wins already at the national event in Phoenix and a West divisional race, Rockwell has rocketed to seventh nationally in the All Harley Drag Race Associations’s Super Gas points chase. Rockell also nabbed a win at Bremerton Raceway’s season opener April 11.

Jody and Toby Lang (issue 59)

Deliberate. Jody Lang sums up his racing philosophy with a single word. His brother Toby would agree, saying that Jody’s attention to detail has led to his consistent success in the Pro and Sportsman brackets at Bremerton. Jody says he’ll race pretty much anything with no electronics. “It’s not the speed,” he emphasizes. “It’s the competition.”

Doug Arthur (issue 59)

Doug Arthur and Bill Huntington occasionally bump into each other during the work week. Both are carpenters by trade and sometimes their paths cross. And most weekends, Arthur and Huntington get a chance to meet up in the staging lanes at Arthur’s hometrack Pacific Raceways or at Bremerton Raceway.
