The promoter and mutual friend who gave me the first interview six months earlier when he hastily launched the National Sprint Tour. The man who played a key role in Steve starting a weekly racing magazine I edited stories for. The man who earlier that week, while at a race in Iowa, had mapped out races I would cover for him that summer. Just hours earlier, he was the man who e-mailed me to remind me to send him an invoice so he could pay me.

Freddy Vela (issue 96)

Freddie Vela of Sedro Woolley, Wash., has logged seat time on the quarter-mile dragstrip at Pacific Raceways and on the 3/10-mile clay oval at nearby Skagit Speedway. “My first drag race car was a ’79 Z-28,” he says of competing at Pacific Raceways just after graduating from Mount Vernon High School in 1985. “I raced that for five years and only lost two times. I beat a lot of cars with that Camaro.”

Brian Hurlow (issue 96)

When Brian Hurlow of Lakewood, Wash., took his ’73 Corvette to Premium Motors in Tacoma, he intended to trade it in for a white ’65 Pontiac GTO with a red interior.

“I like that body style,” Brian says of the sleek shape of the musclecars that rolled off the General Motors line during the mid-’60s. “When I was a kid my dream car had been a ’65 GTO.”

Brian’s very first car had been a ’59 Chevy Impala and he drove a ’68 GTO during his time at Lakes High School.
