Phil King (Issue 105)

Phil “Killer” King began racing in Walton, New York, during the 1970s. “I had older friends that were into demolition derby,” he says of competing at the Deleware County Fair. “It looked like a blast.” In 1982, Phil headed north to Alaska in search of work and discovered the demolition derby program at Capitol Speedway in the town of Willow.

John Boyatt (Issue 105)

Rusty’s son John Boyatt recalls his father competing at Pacific Raceways and Bremerton. “By the time I was 10, I was at a race every weekend,” John says. “I started racing Hobby Stocks at Spanaway Speedway in 1997, just as I was graduating from Spanaway Lake High School.” John earned money to race by cleaning the neighbor’s horse stall and selling the speakers out of his car.

Gary and Robyn Logsdon (Issue 105)

Gary Logsdon of Spanaway, Wash., started drag racing at Bremerton Raceway in 2006. Wife Robyn had a four-decade head start on her hubby, catching race fever back in 1966 at Lewiston Dragstrip in Montana. “I’ve always liked to drive fast,” Robyn says. “That’s why I was drawn to drag racing.”

Slamfest in Puyallup (April 12-13)

Here’s a sampling of the smash-up action at the 2014 Slamfest, featuring the demo drivers from Evergreen Speedway and others. Saturday night’s line-up included the big V-8s, Trucks, Fig-8s, Rollovers and some crazy demo football. The evening ended with a fireworks show. Sunday’s line-up included the Fig-8s, another football match, chain race, and more. Oh yeah, Mike “Mr. Dizzy” Buse also strapped into a car and dropped from 100 feet up into a pile of vehicles — just your everyday agenda for Slamfest.

Brian Taylor at Evergreen Speedway (Issue 105)

Brian Taylor’s road to racing began when he brought home the race car being stored in the back of the auto shop where he was working. “I met with the owners, saved up some money and bought it,” Brian says of purchasing the ’86 Honda Civic from Mike Marthaller Jr. over the winter. Brian already had some experience with Mike’s JR44 Mini Stocks team as a mechanic and also had helped the Late Model race teams for NASCAR veteran Pete Harding and son Shane.

Racing schools at Evergreen Speedway (Issue 105)

Doug Swerland of Kirkland, Wash., remembers wet tracks being an issue while racing Formula 3 on the European courses, but it was nothing but sunshine and dry tack when he and several other Northwest thrill-seekers met up for the Richard Petty Driving Experience last August at Evergreen Speedway. The group of about 15 students gathered under the grandstands Aug. 12, joking amongst themselves and engaging in light conversation while the sound of stock cars could be heard thundering by outside on the 5/8-mile oval.
