James and John Blackwell (issue 107)

When their Argo JM-5 was delivered it was the first Argo Atlantic car racing in America, and James piloted it to victory in its first outing, winning the 1981 SCCA National at Portland International Raceway.

Steever’s classic Chevies (issue 106)

Dennis Steever graduated from Puyallup High School in 1967, just a year ahead of wife Teri. The South Hill couple was back at their old high school for the 2014 Viking Motorsport Car show with son Tracy, who graduated in nearby Rogers High School’s Class of ’87. “Cars have been a passion since high school,” Dennis reflects on their time at PHS. “When I met my wife she had a ’55 4 door and I had a ’55 sedan.”

Justin Hart (issue 106)

Justin Hart has been banging around demolition derby for 10 years, though he says that should not have come as a shock to his parents. “They were taking me to the races ever since I was 2,” The driver from Kelso, Wash., explains. “They were surprised for some reason that I started racing.”

Phil King (Issue 105)

Phil “Killer” King began racing in Walton, New York, during the 1970s. “I had older friends that were into demolition derby,” he says of competing at the Deleware County Fair. “It looked like a blast.” In 1982, Phil headed north to Alaska in search of work and discovered the demolition derby program at Capitol Speedway in the town of Willow.

Slamfest in Puyallup (April 12-13)

Here’s a sampling of the smash-up action at the 2014 Slamfest, featuring the demo drivers from Evergreen Speedway and others. Saturday night’s line-up included the big V-8s, Trucks, Fig-8s, Rollovers and some crazy demo football. The evening ended with a fireworks show. Sunday’s line-up included the Fig-8s, another football match, chain race, and more. Oh yeah, Mike “Mr. Dizzy” Buse also strapped into a car and dropped from 100 feet up into a pile of vehicles — just your everyday agenda for Slamfest.

Greg Orvella’s 1932 Graham (issue 103)

When Greg Orvella retired in 2010 after 14 years as a Teamster driver with the Boeing Co., he knew it was time to get to work on a project that had been waiting quietly since the company’s 757 took its very first flight. It was 34 years ago that Greg shelled out a little over two grand and brought home a 1932 Graham project car.

Greg Lovell (issue 102)

In 2004 Greg Lovell followed his uncle’s course into vintage racing. It was 30 years earlier that the Lake Tapps, Wash., driver had started racing Conference in 1974. He says his parents were against him taking up racing when they preferred him taking college courses instead. Now he races in one of two ’68 Forsgrini Mk 10 in Sovren competition.
