Norm Braedt (issue 107)

It took a truck to help Norm Braedt find the path from Tacoma to Bremerton Raceway. “I had been building cars all my life,” he recalls. “Then I built a ’68 Chevy with a performance motor so I brought it out to the dragstrip.” Four decades later, Norm has had the chance to rack up his own seat time at Northwest dragstrips, including Bremerton, Pacific Raceways, Yakima, Spokane, Boise, Woodburn and Shelton.

Robbie Price (issue 107)

Son of a stock car racer himself, Wilroc veteran Randy Price began racing at Western Speedway at the age 16. By the time his son Robbie turned 16 the third-generation driver already had kicked off his eighth season. “I asked him if he wanted to race and he said yes,” Randy recalls. “I can’t stop him now – it’s all he talks about. He lives for racing.”

Steever’s classic Chevies (issue 106)

Dennis Steever graduated from Puyallup High School in 1967, just a year ahead of wife Teri. The South Hill couple was back at their old high school for the 2014 Viking Motorsport Car show with son Tracy, who graduated in nearby Rogers High School’s Class of ’87. “Cars have been a passion since high school,” Dennis reflects on their time at PHS. “When I met my wife she had a ’55 4 door and I had a ’55 sedan.”

Justin Hart (issue 106)

Justin Hart has been banging around demolition derby for 10 years, though he says that should not have come as a shock to his parents. “They were taking me to the races ever since I was 2,” The driver from Kelso, Wash., explains. “They were surprised for some reason that I started racing.”

Jeff Grubbs (issue 106)

Jeff Grubbs took up drag racing steadily in 2007, fielding a ’67 Camaro at Pacific Raceways.

“I’d always been into hot rods and wanted to go fast,” the Olympia driver says. “I used to street race back when I went to Olympia High School. The drag strip is safer and I didn’t want to get into any more trouble.”

Born and raised in Clearview, Wash., Scott Burby took up racing at nearby Evergreen Speedway in 2011. “I always wanted to race since my days at Cascade High School,” he says. “I just decided to do it.”

Phil King (Issue 105)

Phil “Killer” King began racing in Walton, New York, during the 1970s. “I had older friends that were into demolition derby,” he says of competing at the Deleware County Fair. “It looked like a blast.” In 1982, Phil headed north to Alaska in search of work and discovered the demolition derby program at Capitol Speedway in the town of Willow.

John Boyatt (Issue 105)

Rusty’s son John Boyatt recalls his father competing at Pacific Raceways and Bremerton. “By the time I was 10, I was at a race every weekend,” John says. “I started racing Hobby Stocks at Spanaway Speedway in 1997, just as I was graduating from Spanaway Lake High School.” John earned money to race by cleaning the neighbor’s horse stall and selling the speakers out of his car.
