6257 SP-type Caboose

The lettering on this caboose indicates it was built in 1947, but the books list the 6257 as starting in 1948. While clearly the original paint, it has a much duller, matte orange finish than the Lionel trains I've ever seen before, which makes me wonder if this isn't some pre-release version that isn't listed in the normal sources. Just speculation. I suspect an overhang is supposed to be on the front part of the caboose, and the stairs also are missing. There is a sliver of plastic absent along the bottom edge of the left side. A nice metal coupler unit is used on the leading truck, and just a swiveling axle setup with no coupler at the rear (see pic below.) I'm not sure if the numbers being underscored has any significance. This piece may not be in perfect condition, but it certainly makes an interesting piece in my collection.
